Laureate warns over IP reform
Article Abstract:
Sir John Sulston, a Nobel prizewinner and honorary fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge University, has attacked the university over its plans to reform intellectual property rights. Sulston has called the plans, which would give the university ownership of all intellectual property produced by its academics, "misguided" and contends that they could end the university's aim of "freely promulgating knowledge".

Article Abstract:
The GBP25 million Research-Informed Teaching Environment Initiative fund to improve research-based teaching and maintain high standards of honours degrees in England will be mainly aimed at new universities. Universities will be allocated funding inversely proportional to the amount received for research through the REA.

The government is to launch an UKPd63 million competition for collaborative research and development projects. The aim of the competition, which will formally open on 24 November 2005, is to pinpoint funding to help new ideas make the transition from the drawing board to the marketplace.
